Self-determination experience of children with disabilities at home

The purpose of the study is to examine self-determination experience of children with disabilities at home. The researcher will interview ten parents of children with disabilities in terms of parents’ responses toward children’s self-determination experience; specifically, parents’ awareness of the importance of self-determination, different types of self-determination experience of children with disabilities, and parental strategies and expectations to promote self-determination. 1. As a result of this session participants will be able to recognize strategies to promote self-determination depending on the type of disabilities, and learn support system which can be employed by parents at home. 2. As a result of this session, participants will be able to recognize the needs for self-determination training from toddlers to adolescents, and be aware of the needs for self-determination training that linked educational institutions and home. 3) As a result of this session participants will be able to recognize the need for development of parents training program so that parents promote self-determination of their children with disabilities at home. This will lead to the improvement of parents’ awareness of self-determination and, therefore, parents will have more access to support system for their children with disabilities.
