Literacy for All: Free Web-based Tools for Making Complex Text Accessible

All students should have access to literacy; however, our students with extensive support needs often do not have instructional access to general education materials. Teachers struggle to provide grade appropriate content to students who may not be on grade level. Through using free software tools, teachers can provide grade appropriate materials that are both standards-based and designed to meet the needs of unique learners. After this session, participants will be able to: Summarize the importance of providing age and grade appropriate materials literacy materials to all students; Use a free online tool to shorten the length of digital text; Use a free online tool to simplify the language used in digital text; Use a free online tool to create literacy-based, grade appropriate assessments; and Discuss the universal design for learning approach to using these tools, within the general education classroom, to meet a variety of student learning needs, including students who are English language learners, students with learning disabilities, and students with extensive support needs.
