The presenter is working with medical personnel to improve the continuity of care for children with disabilities. This will be a discussion of how doctors can best communicate with parents of children with disabilities and school personnel about educational and therapeutic options. Participants will discuss strategies to incorporate doctors into children’s teams and potential barriers to collaboration between families, physicians and school personnel. After this session, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the importance of having a collaborative team that includes medical personnel after listening to a brief description of the research on this topic which will focus on student outcomes and family support. 2. Share and discuss parent and professional goals and expectations for medical and educational collaboration. Identify the similarities and differences of the expectations presented. 3. Discuss with other parents and professionals strategies that can increase communication and collaboration. 4. Identify potential barriers for communication and collaboration.
