Guidance for Communication Assessment and Intervention from the National Joint Committee

The National Joint Committee on Communication Needs for People with Severe Disabilities (NJC) recently published practice guidelines for individuals with complex communication needs associated with severe disabilities. This poster will highlight the guidelines for assessments and interventions as well as a revision of the popular “Communication Bill of Rights,” which emphasizes full participation in home, school, and community settings. 1. identify 3 or more communication rights of persons with severe disabilities. 2. identify 2 or more guidelines for assessment of communication skills and required supports for persons with severe disabilities. 3. identify at least one characteristic of appropriate communication intervention targets for persons with severe disabilities.
