Function-based Interventions for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Schools

This session synthesizes function-based interventions for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) research studies published between 2000 – 2012. We will present research findings on (a) the extent of the application of function-based interventions for students with ASD, and (b) interventions that are most effective for supporting positive behaviors and reducing challenging behaviors in school settings. By the end of this session, attendees will be able to: (a) identify a variety of assessment methods used when planning interventions to support positive behaviors and reduce challenging behaviors, (b) describe various interventions used to effectively support positive behaviors and reduce challenging behaviors in school settings, and (c) discuss areas in need of further research.
