Collaborative Decision Making: Maximizing Paraprofessional-Teacher Relationships and Student Outcomes

Interested in developing a more meaningful relationship between paraprofessionals and teachers? This session, led by an educational team of a paraprofessional, general, and special educator will examine ways to develop this relationship for the maximum benefit for students. The discussion will be framed by current research about paraprofessional-teacher relationships and will delve into practices by this team about strong working relationships and collaborative decision making. After this session, participants will identify barriers to positive working relationships as framed by current research about paraprofessional-teacher relationships. After this session, participants will understand strategies for breaking down these barriers in their classrooms. The educational team will present a wide variety of strategies that have worked in their shared classroom. After this session, participants will learn about the strategy of Collaborative Decision Making as a tool for improving student outcomes through a case study presented by the educational team. After this session, participants will develop an action plan for implementing the strategies described to make short- and long-term improvements.
